Today we honor the memory of
Martin Luther King, and we resolve to rid ourselves of all racial prejudice. Our
first step in freeing ourselves from racial prejudices, and one thing that
makes that difficult, is that our elders communicated their prejudices to us.
Like, one day when my mother
and i were picnicking at a park bench, when an African American family to the
next bench, and the woman surprised me by beginning to nurse her baby. Seeing
my surprise, my mother said, "You must accept the fact that they are
different from us."
She said that because she has
been raised to think that way. But that was very un-Christian of her. How many
African American individuals have been deeply hurt by such attitudes.
