We say, "Happy New Year," but what the Bible has to say is more than that.

Monday, 1/1/18

We are all saying, "Happy New Year" to each other. Perhaps we can elevate our feelings by reading what today's Scripture readings say to us.

From the First Reading we might cherish Our Lord's New Year wishes:
"The Lord bless and keep you! May he let his face shine on you."

In the Second Reading we hear: "God sent the Spirit of his Son
into our hearts," That has equipped us to cry out, "Abba, Father!"

In the Gospel we read, "When eight days were completed
for his circumcision he was named Jesus." It was a name
meaning "Savior." And it was given to him because

that eight-day-old child has come to save us
from the sorrows we bring on ourselves.
