As priests we take part in three ccvenants.

Saturday, 12/18/17

If all goes well, by next Saturday I'll be sixty-five years a priest, and I'd like to recount what of the priesthood I have most treasured through those years. I'd say its been three covenants: ours with Jesus, his with the Father, and we Christians between ourselves.

A covenant is the special type of contract in which the parties exchange not money or other things of value, but their own selves.  As in marriage where the priest asks, "Have you come here freely, without reservations to give yourselves to each other in marriage?"

The covenant between Jesus and us is consummated by Jesus giving himself to us.

His covenant with God was brought about by Jesus saying, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."

Our covenant with other Christians is brought about by our jointly being united to each other as part of the Eucharist, or the "Pleasing Body of Christ."
