Our Gospel gives the first of three parables in Chapter Twenty-Five of Matthew's Gospel. The three taken together tell us both how we are doing with or lives, and how our lives will be judged on the Last Day.
In today's parable, Jesus tells us our lives will be judge successful in God's eyes if we have oil in our lamps, or Grace in our souls when our end comes.
The second of Our Lord's end-times parables tells our lives will be successful in God's eyes if we have done well with our Talents. When the Bible says we are made in God's image, it means that we each are born with our distinct potentials for being God-like. Our lives will be judged successful if we have developed those talents to become God-like.
In Our Lord's third parable, God is like a shepherd separating sheep from goats. Our lives will be judged successful if like those on his right we have fed the hungry and given shelter to the homeless, seeing that what we have done for those needy ones we have done for hm.
