With the latest American statistics
showing less than two percent of our population engaged in farming, the force
of Our Lord's harvesting parables are lost on us.
Not so with me. I spent the
first eleven years of my priesthood ministering to a Korean population of which
ninety percent of the people were in farming, with ten percent as
potters busing with turning clay into giant urns for storing their kimchi.
Our people near starved
through February, March and half of April, while the next two months were given
to marriages and heavy eating, with some drinking.
Jesus called the rich man a
fool because he missed out on the partying and feasting while he was building
large barns.
