"It ant what you used to be, it's what you are today."

A man in the crowd around Jesus called out, "Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nourished you."

Oddly, Jesus brushed aside his own high regard fpr Mary. He said, "Rather, blessed are those who know the will of God and practice it."

Jesus could have been making the point that any fine heritage you might have will amount to nothing if you do not now strive to please God now.

My father had a story that might have fit in with what Jesus said. Ninety-five years ago they were putting up a new church for our Epiphany Parish in St. Louis,  and my Dad and John Kulker, a detective, were going from door to door, asking for donations.

They were stuck at the house of an old man who, while giving them nothing, kept them for an hour as he bragged about what he had done for the church in the old days,

Coming out from there, John Kilker made a comment that fit today's lesson.  He said, "Sully, it aint what you used to be, it's what you are today."
