Instead of just avoiding sin, we should live in pursuit of virtue'

Our Gospel today is from Matthew, Chapter Five, and I have pointed out before that this chapter echoes Chapter Twenty-Four of Exodus.

In Exodus Twenty-Four, Moses went up the mountain, gathered the tribal leaders around him, then gave the Ten Commandments, which were the heart and soul of the Old Covenant.

In Matthew Chapter Five, Jesus went up the mountain, gathered the Apostles around him, then gave us the Beatitudes which were the heart and soul of the New Covenant.

The sad part of this is that we all follow the Old Covenant, rather than the New Covenant. Our Catholic upbringing has us fixated on avoiding sin, then going to Confession when we fall behind.

Our Gospel today is from Matthew, Chapter Five, and I have pointed out before that this chapter echoes Chapter Twenty-Four of Exodus.

The sad part of this is that we all follow the Old Covenant, rather than the New Covenant. Our Catholic upbringing has us fixated on avoiding sin, then going to Confession when we fall behind.

But we should be New Covenant People who follow the Beatitudes, rather than  being fixed on just avoiding sin. We should be pursuing Wisdom, Understanding and Meekness rather than just avoiding evil.
But we should be New Covenant People who follow the Beatitudes, rather than  being fixed on just avoiding sin. We should be pursuing Wisdom, Understanding and Meekness rather than just avoiding evil.
