The readings have two fine things to say to us. The
first reading deals with how God speaks to us. He speaks in a “tiny whispering sound.”
And if we want to hear him, we must be quiet ourselves.
The Gospel describes a storm
in which the Apostles felt they were dying. In fact, those roaring winds and
towering waves represent the fearful uncertainty that will be ours at the
moment of our death.
If we have kept the Lord as a
major part of our lives, then, when we are in the grip of that final storm, we
can be sure that he will come walking to us over those waves.
