The New Testament is the fulfillment of the Old Testament.

Our Gospel today is an important passage from Chapter Five of Matthew’s Gospel. Following on these Beatitudes, we have Jesus stating the truly central key to those Gospel, with Jesus saying, “I did not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets, I came to fulfill them.

Chapter 24 of Exodus stated the law, while this Chapter Five of Matthew’s is its fulfilment. In that Chapter 24 of Exodus Moses went up the mountain, gathered his elders around him, then laid out the one-limners at the core of the Old Testament.

This Chapter 5 of Mathew’s Gospel echoes that Chapter 24 of Exodus. Here, Jesus went up the mountain, gathered the Apostles around him then laid out the Beatitudes that are at the core of the New Testament.

The Law in the Old Testament is like the lessons we learn in the first two years of Grade School. They are fulfilled is the siperoer morality of the Beatiudes.
