Abraham gave his descendants a lesson in hospitality.

In the first reading, Abraham, the father of all Hebrews, gave his descendants an exuberant lesson in hospitality. Rather than take credit for being hospitable, he told the passers by that they would do him a great favor by accepting his hospitality.

And what hospitality! Abraham had his servants slaughter and roast a young steer. He told his wife to bake them several hundred rolls. He took care of the curds for preparing a giant cheese dip.

Abraham’s wife Sarah was long past the age for bearing children, so she laughed when the chief guest said she would have a baby. The Old Testament, which has a fondness for punning, had Sarah laugh with a sound like Isaac, the son she was to bare..
