Our Gospel throws us way back to centuries when we were not
asked, “Paper or plastic?” It takes us back to when you got measured to you by
the same measure you scooped out to others.
When you open a cereal box today you might find it a quarter
empty. That couldn’t have happened to
you back when you checked to see that the merchant was scoping with a pint
scoop that measured a full pint. Back then, you held out your apron, making
sure you were getting good measure, flowing over.
Jesus used those old ways of measuring grain to advise you
to be as kind to others as you would have them to be kind to you.
There were no packaged foods during my years in Korea in the
1950’s and 60’s. Everyone just carried a large handkerchief called a podeggy for wrapping any purchase. Their Bible said that when Mary brought
forth her child she wrapped him in her podeggy.
