In today’s Gospel Jesus asked, “Is not life more than food
and the body more than clothing?”
What he meant was that your heavenly Father was wise, resourceful,
and loving enough to give you years and years of vibrant life. Didn’t that show
you he is wise, resourceful and loving enough to find you the food that life
requires to keep it ticking?
When Jesus asked, “Isn’t the body more than clothing? It put
me in mind of Sister De Sales who used to run St. Vincent’s Hospital. Once,
when I went to visit her in her hospital room, I found her sitting in a low
chair, with her hands cupped on her knees. .
She was an over-weight Polish woman, wearing a nightgown that
didn’t add to her appearance, but she looked up at me, and said, “I have been
sitting here thinking about what a wonderful thing my body is.”
If our Father was good and wise enough to give us these
bodies, can’t we trust him to be resourceful enough to supply our bodies with
the duds to cover them?
A little girl who sits worrying about what she will have to
eat and wear, is denying her Father the credit he deserves for always haing
cared for her.
