In this will all know that you are my disciples, that you have love for one another.

The first reading says, “When you gain a friend, first test him, and be not be too ready to trust him.” And the second reading speaks about the exclusive love of husband and wife, but we need a broader approach than either of those.

Jesus said, “In this they will know that you are my disciples, that you have love or one another.

So, if there are two hundred million Americans who register themselves as as Christians, that is how many friends to whom you should be open.

Looking at the matter in what you might call a quasi-metaphysical way, every being around you has his or her value that comes from their being made in God’s image and likeness. Of course, some hae bad bad habits that crust over God’s likeness in them.  With them you need to sing that old song, “Look for the silver lining>”
