The “Letter to the Hebrews” that supplies us with our first
readings for all this week is noteworthy for the way it keeps reminding us that
Jesus, as well as being the unique Son of God, was also fully one of us. We see that in today’s reading.
“He had to become like
his brothers and sisters in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful
high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. Because he himself
was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being
tested.”
We cannot understand how he could be both God and man, but
instead of knocking our heads over this great Mystery, we should thank God that
it can be so,
