We say thanks, over and over, to waitresses, to people who open
doors for us.
So what is this thanks we hand out all around? Is it just a
word? Has it any real meaning?
If you look it up in a good dictionary you will see that it
is a variation on the word thinks.
Each of us is so wound up with thinking of ourself that we
hardly ever give a serious, appreciative thought to another. We give no thought
for what that other is suffering, or for what sacrifice that other has made for
us.
To say thinks, and really meaning it, we suspend our
self-absorption to give tha appreciative thought to the other.
