Jesus said, “Every
scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a
household who brings from his storeroom both the new an the old.”
I think that there Jesus is telling us that if you want to
instruct others you must have the “new” in the form of an awareness of what is
happening around us; and the old in the form of the learning we pick up from
schooling, particularly from schooling in the Bible.
A school teacher who makes her students memorize poetry and
Bible verses, recently explained the value of having such material in their heads.
She said they can only assimilate new knowledge when they have something in their head to which they can attach the new stuff, and they say, “O yes, it’s like this other thing.”
We all like that song from Porgy and Bess: "Nobody knows the trouble Ive seen, nobody knows my sorrow." Now, the Bible is a very fat book, but it has to be to supply the right answer to every and all of the troubles and sorrows we bring to it for remedies. In addition to a fat Bible, we need the help of a scribe who can bring forth from his storeroom the right new and old answers.
The Catholic Church has always ben in the education business. Everything in God’s world is related to everything else, the new and the old.
