The Scriptures recommend two paths to Wisdom.

Monday, 5/16/16

St. James In his Letter asks us what it takes to be truly wise, and there are two answers to that question on page after page of the Bible.

One manner of being wise that is recommended by the Scriptures is that of avoiding folly, by which is meant avoiding courses of action that bring short term pleasure, while leading to eventual grief. Wisdom Literature presents Wisdom and Folly as sisters, each pulling us in her direction. To be wise we choose that course of action that, while being difficult at first, leads to long term happiness.

The Bible’s other manner of pursuing wisdom is to see Wisdom personified as God. We avail ourselves of such Wisdom by clearing our mind from idle thoughts and desires, by putting ourselves  in God’s presence, and by quietly letting him show us meaning and direction.
