St. James In his Letter asks us what it takes to be truly
wise, and there are two answers to that question on page after page of the
Bible.
One manner of being wise that is recommended by the
Scriptures is that of avoiding folly, by which is meant avoiding courses of
action that bring short term pleasure, while leading to eventual grief. Wisdom
Literature presents Wisdom and Folly as sisters, each pulling us in her
direction. To be wise we choose that course of action that, while being
difficult at first, leads to long term happiness.
