In the Gospel
Jesus prayed for his disciples whom God has given him out of this world. His prayer
for priests impressed me mightily in 1941. The new priest in our parish had
books for me to pick up, and I saw a
framed version of this prayer for priests from today’s gospel on his wall. He
explained to me that Jesus, while leaving us in this world, keeps us as his
ministers in the world.
That priest,
Father Jimmy Curtain, went on to be the director of all Catholic schools in
Missouri. All along, he depended on this prayer, as all priests still depend on
this prayer that Jesus said for us.
In the same
way, all of us priests today depend on this same prayer that Jesus offers for
his priests.
