Jesus wants each us to muse over what he means by saying he is the way, the truth, and the life. Let me tell you something of what it can mean for me.
In saying he is the way, Jesus could mean that we should go where he would go and do what he would do. As cradle Catholics we had the more negative approach of just striving to avoid what Jesus would avoid. Jesus urges us to do more, urging us to take all the opportunities he would take for helping those who needed help.
In saying he is the truth, Jesus could mean that he wants to bring us along in fully embracing God who is truth itself, and in embracing all the scientific truth that is the underpinning of God's creation.
In saying he is the life, Jesus could mean that he not only tells us how to live, but he gives us the grace or energy to live rightly. That is similar to what John meant by "grace" in verse 17 of Chapter One of is Gospel, "While the law was given though Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."
