The first reading shows us Peter
speaking to the crowds on Pentecost Sunday. It seems odd, that we should skip fifty days to
Pentecost the day after Easter. But our Church’s point in giving us this
reading is that until Peter was empowered by the Holy Spirit, he was not able to
fully appreciate the joys of the Resurrection.
But, up to fifty years ago we had
another Bible reading for Easter Monday. We had the story of the two disciples
who fleeing Jerusalem, took the road to the town of Emmaus.
That reading gave us one of our favorite priest jokes. It was not unusual for priests right after Mass on Easter Monday
morning to head off for the golf course, and anyone who came looking for a priest,
was told, “Sorry, the priests have all gone to Emmaus.”
