The readings today tell us we must be serious about living
Christian lives. In the first reading Paul tells us we must “work out our
salvation in fear and trembling.” He was saying, “It isn’t a snap, and if we
treat it like a snap we won’t be saved.”
Jesus told us we must put every cent we have into building a
worthwhile life. He was saying life is a battle that can go either way. It will go against us
if we don’t put everything we have, and all our vital planning into facing the
fight.
It is so easy, and so disastrous to just bungle along from
day to day. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s last novel told the story of Doctor Dick
Diver who put too much of himself into his social life. I felt the despair
gripping him when a former admirer said, “Dick Diver is no longer a serious scientist.”
The game is up for us if we are no longer serious Christians.
